Iconic Home Alone House Finds Buyer After Nearly Two Decades

Since its premiere in 1990, Home Alone has become an enduring Christmas classic. The film’s charm and comedic timing have captivated audiences worldwide, making it one of the most successful films ever.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Tim and Trisha Johnson, current owners of the Home Alone house, shared that fans still stop by the iconic redbrick Georgian house in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, to take pictures and re-create scenes from the movie.

It’s official: the “McCallister house” has found a buyer. According to The Real Deal, the sale of this famous mansion was marked “contingent” on May 31, meaning an agreement will be reached once certain conditions like inspections or financing are finalized. This comes just a week after it was listed for $5.25 million on May 24.

The Johnsons bought the sprawling five-bedroom, six-bathroom property for $1.59 million in 2012. They have lived there ever since, carefully preserving recognizable areas featured in the film, like the foyer staircase, formal living room, and dining room. That was in the movie and it’s classic, Trisha told WSJ. We didn’t want to take that out or touch it in any way.

They also expanded and renovated, adding 5,100 square feet of living space to the original 1921-built home which now totals 9,126 square feet. Significant updates include an expanded gourmet kitchen that boasts white countertops offset by sleek dark wood cabinets and a breakfast nook with blue leather seating.

The basement saw major enhancements as well, now featuring a gym, a full bathroom, and a seven-seat home theater complete with a bar—a noteworthy addition for film enthusiasts.

Other highlights of this much-loved home include a junior primary bedroom located in the former attic space, two laundry rooms, a second living room, a heated three-car garage, and a spacious backyard complete with patio area.

The facade of the Home Alone house is particularly impressive during winter months. Its red-brick exterior seems especially stunning under a blanket of snow.
