Early Days in the Army
In the early ’70s, while serving in the U.S. Army, George Strait tried out for a band called the Country Kings. Despite his enthusiasm, after just one performance, the band decided he wasn’t country enough. 
I played one gig with them, and I don’t even remember how much they paid me. They thought I wasn’t country enough, and let me go.

I hadn’t really gotten into country music back then. It was all rock’n’roll

A Second Chance and Unprecedented Success
Post-Army life led Strait to Rambling Country, a band comprising fellow soldiers. After leaving the service in 1975 and earning an agriculture degree in 1979, Strait’s big break came in 1981 with the release of Unwound
. This single set the stage for an illustrious career marked by 60 No. 1 hits.
The Record-Breaking Concert
Known for his signature style and ability to draw massive crowds, George Strait recently made history again. On June 15 (2024), he performed at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field to a record crowd of 110,905 fans—a milestone evening shared with Parker McCollum and Catie Offerman.
This show surpassed the previously held U.S. record by The Grateful Dead back in 1977 with 107,019 attendees at Raceway Park.
