A Spaceballs sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to star, and will produce alongside Mel Brooks.
Josh Greenbaum will direct the film, while Kevin Salter will executive produce. The screenplay is penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad. Currently, the project is in early stages, and plot details are kept under wraps.
The writing duo Samit and Hernandez are best known for their work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Pokemon Detective Pikachu, Addams Family 2, and the Disney+ special Lego Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy. The latter is especially interesting as it indicates a blend of comedy and nostalgia that might be expected in the new Spaceballs sequel.
A Classic Comedy Returns
The original 1987 MGM film Spaceballs starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, with Brooks playing President Skroob and Yogurt. The film was a parody of sci-fi franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Alien.
The Versatile Josh Gad
The Book of Mormon co-stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells will reunite on Broadway for Gutenberg! The Musical,
beginning performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre on 15 September,
. Written by Beetlejuice book writers Scott Brown and Anthony King, the musical will be directed by Alex Timbers. Gad will play all roles in what is ultimately a zany send-up of musical theatre.
A Tribute to the Comedic Legacy
Gad, best known for his work on Broadway in The Book of Mormon and as the voice of Olaf in the Frozen franchise, is set to make his directorial debut with a Chris Farley biopic. He was recently seen starring alongside his Book of Mormon co-star Andrew Rannells in Gutenberg! The Musical! on Broadway.
Brooks Revisits His Classics
This isn’t Brooks’ first foray into revisiting his classic works. In 2023, he produced History of the World: Part II, a follow-up to his 1981 film. As one of the few actors with an EGOT status – achieved by winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony – Brooks continues to influence comedy cinema profoundly.
The new Spaceballs movie will surely foster high expectations given its talented ensemble both on and off-screen. Stay tuned as more details come to light!
