Less than three weeks after debuting in theaters, The Bikeriders will be hitting VOD, with a release set for July 9th.
Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders is quickly carving its place among the year’s best films. However, its stint on the big screen is narrowing as it’s confirmed to hit VOD on July 9th—just 18 days after its theatrical debut.
While it’s disappointing that The Bikeriders is exiting cinemas so quickly, it’s even more so that Focus Features won’t let it thrive there. The film has earned approximately $14 million against a budget estimated over $40 million.
The Bikeriders captures a rebellious time in America when culture and people were changing. After a chance encounter at a local bar, strong-willed Kathy (Jodie Comer) is drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Much like the country, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.
Jeff Nichols expertly directs this adaptation of Danny Lyon’s iconic photo book. His ability to transform a minor classic of modern photo-anthropology
into a gripping narrative shows his understanding of the source material and its relevance today.
