As we near the anticipated climax of Doctor Who season 14, fans are eager to see what new twists and turns await. Just ahead of the electrifying finale, Empire of Death, it has been revealed that the upcoming Tales of the TARDIS episode with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday will feature a unique remastered version of the classic episode Pyramids of Mars.
This 1975 four-part story originally starred Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, where they faced off against the formidable Sutekh. Fans were recently reintroduced to Sutekh in last weekend’s The Legend of Ruby Sunday.
The thrilling revival brings Sutekh‘s character back into the limelight almost half a century later. Gabriel Woolf, who reprises his voice role as Sutekh, commented in an interview: It felt sort of inevitable in a way. I’d never lost Sutekh because of the fans. They’ve kept him alive, organized conventions all over the place, so it feels kind of natural.
Phil Collinson, executive producer of the show, shared his enthusiasm about bringing back such a significant part of Doctor Who history: Revisiting the rich history of Doctor Who is endlessly thrilling and this is no exception. It’s so exciting to bring back Tales of the TARDIS again, and to revisit a classic enemy of the Doctor.
The remastered version will be featured as a feature-length omnibus with updated visual effects, which should be a treat for longtime fans and new audiences alike.
This also marks the first occasion where Fifteen and Ruby explore their own adventures in what has been termed the Remembered TARDIS, offering reflective moments throughout their battles.
On reviving the character in modern times, Woolf noted: It’s excellent; they will have the complete backstory of Sutekh so they will know how it all began.
He added that working with Tom Baker was akin to being in a dramatic play, highlighting their on-screen chemistry.
The excitement around this callback not only brings nostalgia but adds an intriguing layer to the current storyline. Don’t miss Tales of the TARDIS: Pyramids of Mars, airing on Thursday 20th June at 8pm on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.
