Blumhouse has officially announced that Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Doctor Sleep, will write, direct, and produce a new film in the The Exorcist franchise. This marks a significant chapter for the saga, especially following the underwhelming performance of The Exorcist: Believer, which earned $65.5M domestically and $136.2M worldwide.
Fresh Take on a Classic
Rumored earlier but now confirmed, Flanagan’s new project is described as a radical new take on The Exorcist. Unlike its predecessor, this film will feature an all-new story set within the established universe. The project reunites Flanagan with frequent collaborator Trevor Macy, producing on behalf of Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures banner.
Continuing a Collaborative Legacy
Fans can look forward to the fourth collaboration between Flanagan and Blumhouse. The duo previously worked together on notable titles such as Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). Each of these films demonstrated their ability to blend psychological thrillers with supernatural elements effectively.
A Dream Project for Flanagan
Flanagan shared his enthusiasm about joining the iconic horror franchise, stating, The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe.
This sentiment is echoed by Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum, who said,Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse.
Anticipation Builds
The announcement has generated substantial buzz among horror enthusiasts. David Robinson of Morgan Creek expressed his excitement:I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide.
Upcoming Release
The next installment in The Exorcist universe titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, featuring an entirely new plot and characters, is slated for release in 2025.
