ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Justyn-Henry Malloy ignited the Detroit Tigers with an inside-the-park homer in the fourth inning, with Carson Kelly adding a crucial three-run homer, leading to a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
This match not only marked the end of Detroit’s four-game losing streak but also halted the Angels’ six-game winning run.
Thriller in the Ninth Inning
The Angels made a thrilling comeback attempt in the ninth inning. They trailed 7-1 before Zach Neto nailed a three-run homer. Jo Adell joined in with a two-run shot, both with two outs against Shelby Miller.
Calm Despite Pressure
Despite this late surge, Tyler Holton’s composure shone through as he struck out Nolan Schanuel to clinch his second save and secure Detroit’s third win in nine games.
A.J. Hinch, manager of the Tigers, expressed relief after the tense game: You can’t complain about a win, especially with how things have gone. We’re going to get out of here with a win, get on a plane, have a happy off day. We obviously needed the win, no matter how it comes.
Mize’s Resilient Performance
Casey Mize (2-6) was pivotal in this victory, delivering scoreless three-hit ball into the sixth inning and securing his first win in twelve starts since April 21. His early departure due to an apparent leg injury did not hinder Detroit’s momentum.
Mize described his management on the field: Zeros are good, so the scoreboard was good for us. Tough weekend here for us, so obviously I wanted to do my part. I’m happy with my outing, but the run support early allows me to just go attack the strike zone, and we played really good defense.
Miller’s Mishap
Shelby Miller’s performance unraveled when he hit leadoff batter Taylor Ward with a 93-mph fastball. Though Ward was taken out as a precaution, Taylor Ward avoided serious injury. However, it brought back memories from last June when Ward was hit by Alek Manoah and missed the rest of the season.
Ward’s manager Ron Washington affirmed that Ward is fine: He’s fine, thank God. I think (pitchers) have been going up and in on him a lot throughout the season. Today, one just got away. I got an apology from A.J. and Shelby. They didn’t try to do that on purpose. I never thought they did, but … you never want to see that, ever.
Malloy Lights Up Angel Stadium
Malloy contributed significantly with his inside-the-park homer that sailed over center fielder Mickey Moniak at the wall. The ball’s advantageous bounce off allowed Malloy to hastily reach home unchallenged — Detroit’s first such homer since 2021.
That run felt like a mile. That felt so long… It’s always a fun play, (but) I don’t know the last time I ever hit one, and I think everyone saw me tackle home. That was hilarious. Ran out of gas.
