Costner highlighted these struggles during his TODAY interview: Number one, I did it for five years, OK, and I want to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point and I thought, ‘Well that can’t ever happen again.’ It was well over a year.

The actor expressed hope regarding his return: Maybe this will circle back to me
. He firmly believes there’s always a chance, reiterating his love for the show and its character-driven narratives.
The uncertainty of life is not lost on him, as he succinctly put it: You’re going to drive home. You don’t know if somebody gets on the on-ramp going the wrong way… I’ve lived my life the way I’ve lived it… and if I would be taken tomorrow… it wouldn’t be as important as the fact that I got to make the first two [films].
