Kevin Costner Confirms Exit From Yellowstone and Teases New Western Epic

Days after discussing what it would take for him to return to Yellowstone, Kevin Costner has announced he’s officially done with the hit show. The actor made this surprising announcement in a video shared on Instagram.

If you don’t like it, it’s all on me. If you do, just know that every little detail was meant with the idea I knew you might catch it, Costner said, highlighting his deep involvement and commitment to both past projects and his latest endeavor.

He has been working meticulously on a multi-part film series, the first of which Horizon: An American Saga, is set to hit theaters next week. This much-anticipated movie is slated for release on June 28, 2024, marking a significant moment for fans eagerly waiting for a new saga in cinema.

Horizon is not just another project for Costner. He directs and stars in this western epic, the first planned installment of a broader franchise. This project aims to reignite interest in the Western genre, something Costner is famously associated with since the 1980s.

In an interview on Howard Stern’s radio show, Costner candidly spoke about his decision-making process, stating that he would return to Yellowstone only if the planets want to align up. He clarified that this means the need for suitable storylines and scripts, adding, I want to work more than once a year. However, conflicting schedules and creative differences ultimately led him to step away.

Costner also admitted that brainstorming ways for his Yellowstone character’s story to end was challenging, pointing out that Taylor Sheridan, the showrunner, had the final say.

This period marks a bittersweet transition for both Costner and his fans. While he is departing from the hit series Yellowstone where he played John Dutton, he reassures his audience with new cinematic promises in Horizon: An American Saga Chapter One. Set against expansive western landscapes and backed by a massive ensemble cast, this film hopes to captivate audiences akin to classics like Tombstone.

In a somewhat emotional farewell posted online, Kevin remarked, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future… I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.
