Jerry Bruckheimer Confirms Two New Pirates of the Caribbean Scripts in Development

Jerry Bruckheimer, legendary producer known for blockbuster hits, recently shared exciting updates on the status of two new Pirates of the Caribbean scripts. During a conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, he disclosed that the beloved swashbuckling saga is actively navigating its way back to the big screen.

Bruckheimer revealed that both scripts are being developed concurrently. He shared, We are working on it. Jeff Nathanson is working on a script. We have another one… We have two, and we don’t know who’s gonna win the horse race at this point. But hopefully in the next month, I’ll have a script and maybe Disney will want to make it.

Margot Robbie’s Pirates Spin-off

Amid these exciting developments, fans are also eager about a female-led Pirates spin-off starring Margot Robbie, which was announced back in 2020. Even though Robbie commented in 2022 that the project might be shelved, Bruckheimer countered with optimism. He affirmed that we’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.

Despite delays in development, Disney’s interest in Margot Robbie remains strong. Bruckheimer mentioned, Johnny Depp is excited about it, obviously Disney is, we’re excited about it.

‘Pirates’ Franchise Faces Challenging Waters

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been incredibly successful, grossing over €623 million worldwide from its five films. Following the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, speculation regarding a sixth installment began almost immediately. The film’s post-credit scene hinted at more adventures with iconic characters like Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and Davy Jones (Bill Nighy).

Significant shifts occurred when creative differences led Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to depart from the project in late 2019. Consequently, Disney brought back veteran writer Ted Elliott alongside Craig Mazin to chart a new course for the series. Although progress slowed due to the Writers Guild of America strike, by September 2023, they confirmed that Disney had purchased their script.

Viability of Upcoming Scripts

Bruckheimer remarked on the potential future direction of the franchise saying, I would never say no because I love Pirates of the Caribbean. I love Captain Jack, and I love the franchise. Jerry Bruckheimer is its own cinematic universe.

The commitment to exploring fresh narratives indicates that Johnny Depp’s tenure as Captain Jack Sparrow may conclude soon. Bruckheimer added detail saying that while scripting continues for both directions with or without Depp and with possible engagement from Margot Robbie.
