Exciting news for Shrek fans: Eddie Murphy has confirmed that production on Shrek 5 is well underway, and the film is set to delight audiences as early as 2025. During an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Murphy also teased that his beloved character, Donkey, will have a standalone film of his own.

In his conversation with Weintraub, Murphy confirmed, We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].
Murphy, who has voiced Donkey since the original Shrek released in 2001, added that while he isn’t working on both projects simultaneously, fans won’t have to wait long between the two releases. I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next.
