A New York preschooler received a life-changing surprise from his former teacher who revealed she would donate a part of her liver to him. The moment was captured on camera by Carissa Fisher’s mother during their visit to 5-year-old Ezra’s home in Alden, New York, on May 25.
It was emotional. It made me very happy to see both of them happy
, Carissa Fisher reflected, highlighting the bond she shares with Ezra.
Surprise Visit Brightens Ezra’s Day
Fisher’s surprise included a colorful poster and a stuffed teddy bear. Her mother documented the visit, creating lasting memories for Ezra and his family.
A Moving Moment for Karen Toczek
Ezra’s mom, Karen Toczek, was overwhelmed with emotion. We were overwhelmed with emotion
, she admitted.
Ezra, described by his mom as a very animated child who always has something entertaining to say, was thrilled about the news.
The Connection That Runs Deep
Fisher met Ezra in 2022 as his preschool teacher. Upon seeing Toczek’s post about Ezra needing a liver transplant, she immediately decided to help. There wasn’t really a second thought. I just immediately was like, OK, I have to try this. I have to do this
, Fisher recalled.
Ready for the Surgery
The surgery for Ezra’s liver transplant is set for later this summer. Fisher and Toczek both hope that by sharing their story, they can raise awareness about living organ donation.
According to Fisher, doctors plan on taking out about 30% of her liver and replacing Ezra’s damaged liver with the portion from hers. Both their livers are expected to regenerate and be functional.
Inspiring Others to Donate
Toczek shared that many people don’t realize one can be a living donor for a liver. She hopes that Fisher’s selflessness will inspire others to consider stepping out of their comfort zone and help those in need.
