Apple TV+ has dropped a trailer for its new ten-episode darkly comedic mystery series titled Sunny, starring Rashida Jones. Based on Colin O’Sullivan’s novel The Dark Manual, the show is brought to life by showrunner Katie Robbins, director Lucy Tcherniak, and executive producer Rashida Jones herself.
Mysterious Premise
The storyline follows Suzie, an American woman residing in Kyoto, Japan. Her life turns upside down when her husband and son vanish in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, she’s given Sunny, a domestic robot created by her husband’s electronics company. Initially resistant to Sunny’s presence, Suzie steadily forms an unexpected bond with the robot as they investigate the true fate of her family.
Noteworthy Cast
The series features an impressive ensemble cast. Japanese actor and model Hidetoshi Nishijima plays Suzie’s presumedly dead husband. The cast also includes actor and television personality YOU as villainous industrialist Hime and the legendary Judy Ongg as Suzie’s mother-in-law. Jun Kunimura portrays the roboticist Yuki Tanaka, while Joanna Sotumura lends her voice to the robot Sunny.
A Unique Blend
This series marks the second collaboration between Apple, A24, and Rashida Jones, following Sofia Coppola’s 2020 film On the Rocks. Like its predecessor, Sunny delves into themes of trust and betrayal within a marriage but adds a unique twist through its technologically charged narrative.
Tackling Similar Themes Differently
Apple TV+ continues exploring compelling narratives about suspicion within relationships. Other shows like The Last Thing He Told Me starring Jennifer Garner and Dark Matter featuring Joel Edgerton tread similar ground. However, Sunny‘s addition of a witty robot draws intriguing parallels to previous works like the 1987 children’s film Too Much.
Anticipated Premiere
Sunny is set to premiere on July 10, 2024, exclusively on Apple TV+. Stay tuned for what promises to be a blend of mystery, technology, and emotional depth.
