Witness Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the object of Orlok’s eerie fascination.
Released on June 24, 2024, the first Nosferatu teaser trailer delivers a cinematic chill. Despite not showing the full transformation of Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, his unnerving essence pierces through.
The trailer teases Robert Eggers’ reimagining of the 1922 classic, promising a nightmarish experience. Attendees at CinemaCon in Las Vegas got an early glimpse of Lily-Rose Depp (HBO’s The Idol) in the role of Ellen Hutter, caught in Orlok’s sinister web. Set against backdrops of Transylvania and Germany, the story follows estate agent Thomas Hutter (The Menu’s Nicholas Hoult) who discovers that his new client, Count Orlok, is a vampire lusting after his wife.
Ellen’s turmoil intensifies as Orlok invades her dreams, conjuring disturbing visions. The trailer briefly shows Skarsgård crouched over and gnawing on a meal, hinting at his ghastly transformation.
It was like conjuring pure evil, Skarsgård reflected on embodying this role.
It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me.
Known for his chilling portrayal of Pennywise in the It films, Skarsgård trained rigorously, even lowering his voice by an octave with an opera coach. Director Robert Eggers marveled at his transformative performance, stating:
Apart from his eyes, it’s hard to find Bill. He added that despite some digital effects, Skarsgård’s dedication was evident:
People are going to think it’s all digital tampering, but he put in the work.
The film features Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a fervent vampire hunter. Dafoe previously earned acclaim portraying Max Schreck in Shadow of the Vampire. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin appear as the Hutters’ friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding.
Willem Dafoe also steps into the shoes of Dr. Wilhelm Sievers described as Watson to Von Franz’s Holmes-like character. Eggers confirmed these characters bring an intense depth to the story:
I’ll say that Bill has so transformed, I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there.
The ensemble cast enhances this gothic retelling set against visually haunting landscapes. Fans can expect ‘Nosferatu’ to hit theaters this Christmas.
