E.W. Scripps Co. has confirmed that its Ion Plus free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) network will be accessible over-the-air starting July 1, reaching an impressive 90% of U.S. television homes. This move allows Ion Plus to significantly expand its audience base.

The network will continue streaming on major FAST platforms such as Samsung TV Plus, The Roku Channel, Vizio WatchFree Plus, LG Channels, and Amazon Freevee. Additionally, subscribers to Fubo can also access the channel.

Scripps, known for operating multiple digital multicast over-the-air networks like Grit, Laff, Court TV, and Scripps News, is utilizing its extensive broadcast spectrum—the result of its Ion Media acquisition in 2020—to push these channels into households that have moved away from traditional cable.

This year, Ion also introduced sports and live events to its programming portfolio by securing deals to broadcast games from the WNBA and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). We are honored to collaborate with the NWSL as it continues to grow into one of the most prestigious leagues in the world, with remarkable athletes and world-class competition, said Marie Donoghue.

Cord-Cutting Trends Foster Over-the-Air Growth

Scripps’ strategy is a response to the continuing trend of cord-cutting which has seen a decline in pay TV subscribers.

The shift is substantial; a Pew Research Center survey notes that Americans watching television via cable or satellite dropped from 76% in 2015 to 56% this year. Consequently, networks likeIona and Scripps are capitalizing on over-the-air broadcasting via antennas to attract viewers who have left cable behind.

Scripps’ Acquisitions Boost Network Reach

The acquisition of Ion Media has reinforced Scripps’ position in the broadcast market. Nevertheless, tighter advertising markets have impacted revenues negatively since the merger.

The second quarter showed a dip in revenue for Scripps’ national network unit by 3.3%, resulting in $209 million compared to last year’s financials. Despite this, Ion continues developing a broad content offering through varied programming—positioning itself favorably even amidst fluctuating market conditions.

The Future of Broadcast Entertainment

The landscape of media consumption is rapidly evolving as streaming services become dominant players among younger generations such as Gen Z and millennials. A focus on streaming services driving these changes illustrates how networks must innovate to maintain relevance.
