Former deckhand Nick Mavar, known for spending 16 years on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, passed away at the age of 59 following a medical emergency in Naknek, Alaska. The police chief of Bristol Bay Borough confirmed this news to TMZ. Officers are currently conducting interviews to gather more information about the unfortunate incident.
The tragic event reportedly occurred Thursday afternoon. Nick’s family has been notified and is understandably devastated by the news. Known affectionately as the ‘right hand man’ of Captain Sig Hansen on Deadliest Catch, Nick Mavar’s impact on the show and its viewers was significant.
Long-standing Presence on Deadliest Catch
Nick Mavar served as a deckhand on the F/V Northwestern from 2005 until his departure in 2021, appearing in an impressive 98 episodes during his tenure. He also participated in various spin-off shows like Deadliest Catch: Siberian Winter and Deadliest Catch: The Bait, showcasing his commitment and zeal for his work.
Health Scare Led to Departure
A prior health crisis had led to Nick leaving the show. In July 2021, a clip showed him expressing severe pain:I feel pain, I feel pain,
he told cameras while pointing to his lower stomach.
Consequently, he had to be medically evacuated due to appendicitis, which later resulted in a lawsuit against Captain Sig Hansen. Nick accused the captain of not having an adequate plan for medical emergencies during the pandemic, stating that this caused his appendix to rupture.
Suing Sig Hansen
The lawsuit alleged that the proper measures were not taken to ensure Nick’s safety and blamed his medical issues on this oversight. Captain Hansen countered these claims, pointing fingers at the production company and the medical subcontractor involved.
Life After Deadliest Catch
Post Deadliest Catch, Nick was often seen on his salmon boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska. A devoted Seattle Seahawks fan, he frequently posted pictures on Instagram wearing the team’s gear. His last Instagram post from December of last year honored his father:
Happy 91st birthday to the world’s greatest father & role model. I’m forever grateful for my dad,
it read.
