It has been a wild run over at Sony.  Ever since acquiring the Spider-Man film rights from Marvel Comics in the mid-1990s, they’ve increasingly levied the film side of their business on the property, which has proven to be incredibly profitable when handled with care.  Before The Dark Knight and the MCU took over the industry, the first Spider-Man was the gold standard against which all other movies within the genre were compared: by all rights supplanting Richard Donner’s Superman and Tim Burton’s Batman in the popular conception of superheroism.

But at its equally excellent follow-up, Spider-Man 2, things began to unravel for the franchise.  Sony took an increasingly heavy hand in the development of the franchise — which they desperately wanted to spin-off into a series of related franchises, especially for the highly marketable symbiote characters — which by all accounts ran Spider-Man 3 straight into the ground.  Because they over-invested their film studios into the property, however, they had to find some way to salvage the franchise, lest it return to Marvel.

So they made The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel.  They were fine movies… just fine (if a little underwhelming when all was said and done), but they never lived up to the potential of its iconic character.  They over-invested in the concept of a single-franchise cinematic universe and their plans unraveled into a mighty heap, forcing them to negotiate with the now-Disney owned Marvel Studios, if only to eek out some profit amidst their increasingly turning financial fortunes (in part due to a string of box office bombs that further sank them into debt).

The result of the labor was foremost Spider-Man: Homecoming which, with apologies to Sam Raimi, is easily the best Spider-Man movie to date.  Despite the wall-crawler’s return to Marvel, Sony didn’t walk away from the deal empty-handed.  They could still pursue their own unrelated Spider-features at their leisure, which began with the upcoming Enter the Spider-Verse and the live-action Venom movie that the studio has desperately tried to cobble together for well over a decade.

The production came and went.  Sony fed some confusing lines about its connection to the MCU.  Tom Holland furthered this murky through line by visiting Venom‘s production without warning.  Sony pursued its other spin-offs with increasing zeal, some of which may share certain popular characters with the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

As for our first look as to the content of Venom, though, Spider-fans won’t have to wait long for that.  According to the studio, the first trailer for the movie — which only just wrapped production — is due to be released within two weeks, the movie itself to follow in October.

Now, if DC (and especially Suicide Squad) taught us anything, it’s that trailers can be incredibly misleading, especially ones made for beleaguered productions and on a tight timeline: both of which Venom certainly qualifies as.  Still, it will doubtless give us an idea of what direction Sony decided to take the film — if, indeed, they decided to make it a sequel to Life as was powerfully rumored not all that long ago — and what we can expect from it a few months from now.  At any rate, I’m sure, it will certainly be something to see.
