Showtime has announced the renewal of costume drama The Borgias for a third season. The historical epic, currently in the middle of its second season, will return in April 2013 for 10 additional episodes of treacherous backstabbing and Cesare’s curly locks. Production on the third season will begin in the summer.
Vengeance is the name of the game this season on The Borgias, as Giovanni Sforza is attempting to get justice for the humiliation he suffered upon the annulment of his marriage. Along with his cousin, military leader Catherina, Giovanni is making strides toward the papacy in a bid to remove Rodrigo, but Pope Alexander isn’t ready to let the Chair of Saint Peter be filled by anyone else but himself. The Borgia family has managed to push back the French multiple times and came out of the pressure cooker that was last season mostly unscathed, so taking on the (admittedly powerful) Sforza machine isn’t as daunting as it seems.
But while Rodrigo may have control right now, his children are slipping away, slowly but surely. Juan has become even more of an unreliable monster in recent weeks, while Lucrezia’s burgeoning independence and Cesare’s intelligent maneuvering have given birth to a chasm between themselves and their father. The Pope may be able to wrangle his daughter back into the fold, thanks to her recent connection with Giulia Farnese, but the cardinal has never been under his father’s thumb and they both know it. Can Pope Alexander find a way to get his children back in line in order to present a united front?
The Borgias airs Sundays at 10:00 on Showtime. If you want a sneak peek at the next episode, you can check it out here.
