At the end of last season, the game changer we’ve all been waiting for on Dexter went down when Deb walked in on Dexter killing Travis in the church. So what happens next? Cast members Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter along with guest start Yvonne Strahovski were on hand with executive producers John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Scott Buck and Manny Coto to discuss at this year’s Comic-Con panel.
An exclusive clip of the first two minutes of Season 7 shown to the crowd picks up right where we left off. See below for the clip along with information on where the Morgans are going in the upcoming season and how Yvonne fits into the equation.
Last season the theme of Dexter was all about faith and spirituality. This season, executive producer Scott Buck says it’s a common theme about the consequences of love through the perspective of Dexter, which always provides some really interesting interactions.
What happens with Deb and Dexter?
The sixth season of Dexter had a lot of changes for Deb such as becoming lieutenant and of course learning that her brother is a killer. Jennifer Carpenter says that Deb is ‘taking one step at a time.’She went on to say that in the early seasons of Dexter she feels herself and her character were a lot alike but that her character is starting to veer off and grow more. Mostly she feels that both her and the character have never felt more lost than they have during this season whereas Dexter is more confident in what he is doing. At any moment, her character could arrest Dexter, so dealing with that will be some of the biggest challenges for both Deb and Dex this season.
Dexter, meanwhile, has opened up to a range of human emotions. With his relationships with both Rita and Lumen and the birth of Harrison, his dark passenger has made room for a more human Dexter. Not only has Dexter learned to be shiny and happy but he also has learned to be manipulative, paranoid and self-serving. Dexter is the way he is partially because he is a product of his environment. It’s not only his fault. (See: Harry Morgan’s rules.)
With Harrison still very much in the picture during this season, Deb will be encouraging Dexter to face what he’s really doing while trying to be a parent to his son.
Hanna McKay, played by Yvonne Strahvonski, is said to be a woman of mystery (what a surprise!) who meets Dexter and helps him with an investigation into an old murder mystery. Just what case could that be?!?
Strahvonski, who has only been filming for a few days, is ‘excited to be part of such a great show.’While she says the energy is different on set compared to the playful nature of Chuck, she doesn’t feel like she can really make a comparison between the two since she has only worked a few days. Buck says she was chosen for the role because there’s something quite mysterious about her.
Some other fun facts:
- Michael C. Hall once ran the ‘˜Slice of Life’into a pier causing $8,000 worth of damage.
- Hall’s favorite guest star was the artist formerly known as Mos Def. He also really enjoyed working with John Lithgow.
- Lots of funny moments between former couple, Hall and Carpenter, including a moment when a fan asked Hall looked to her to answer how he and Dexter are alike. Hall also looked at Carpenter amusingly when asked the worst lie he ever told and said ‘That was delicious.’
- Hall’s most satisfying kill is obvious as he says the ‘biggest prize is Trinity.’
