A Charlottesville woman was crowned Miss Virginia 2024 on Saturday, June 24 at the Berglund Center in Roanoke. Carlehr Swanson earned this prestigious title and is set to receive $22,500 in scholarship awards. She will represent the Commonwealth in January 2025 at the national Miss America pageant competition.

Over the next year, Swanson will serve as a motivational speaker, goodwill ambassador, and a performing artist. Swanson plans to visit more than 70 elementary schools to advocate for healthy choices and prevent substance abuse among young students.

Swanson will also spread her personal message about the importance of music in education and personal development. Her talent showcased during the pageant included playing the piano, which caught the attention of many attendees.

Rhonda Howdyshell, founder of The Cinderella Project, attended the Miss Virginia competition and witnessed Swanson’s win. Howdyshell is currently Ms. Senior World VA 70s 2024. Reflecting on Swanson’s performance, Howdyshell said, I took note of her talent because she not only played the piano beautifully but also sang.

In addition to her responsibilities as Miss Virginia, Swanson’s efforts tie into broader substance abuse prevention initiatives in schools. For instance, the West Virginia Department of Education has been implementing comprehensive drug awareness programs through ReClaimWV and Project AWARE to address the opioid epidemic.

These efforts are part of a multi-tiered support system that emphasizes early intervention and mental health awareness to provide a supportive environment for students affected by substance use.

Overall, Carlehr Swanson’s crowning as Miss Virginia 2024 and her focus on promoting substance abuse prevention throughout the state marks an important step forward in addressing these vital issues within our communities.
